Domestic bliss
Article Abstract:
Economists have been analysing the Australian economy for signs of a reaction to the economic troubles in Southeast Asia. The Australian economy has been closely linked to that of Asia, and the four countries worst affected by the Southeast Asian crisis take around 10% of Australian exports. Some experts believe the crisis will reduce Australia's GDP growth for 1998 by 0.25%, but others point to the influences which will fuel domestic demand, and to the possibility of increasing exports to other parts of the world due to Australian dollar depreciation.

Pain down under: Asia's currency crisis also hurts Australia
Article Abstract:
Many Australian companies are keen investors in Asia, but the recent devaluations of the Indonesian rupiah and Philippine peso will affect them, with many predicting lower earnings growth and weaker demand. Others are cutting back on expansion plans in the regions. Some economists believe that Australia's economic growth could be cut by around one-quarter of a percentage point to just under 3% due to the crisis.
