Crest: the big test
Article Abstract:
Crest is a new computer system which was commissioned to replace the previous system, called Taurus, at the UK stock exchange. Taurus was notoriously inefficient and collapsed in 1992. Crest's function is to process 100,000 transactions which take place every day. These amount to 14 billion pounds sterling each day, and it is essential that the system does not make errors with these. The project had to be completed in a hurry to be ready to handle the share transactions which will occur when two major UK building societies turn into banks in summer 1997.

Preaching to the unconverted
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Ltd. Chairman David Svendson has the typical confident, direct style of other Microsoft leaders, but he also some individual ideas for change in the Microsoft approach. Svendson has managed Microsoft Ltd. through a decade of phenomenal growth and his strengths are in organisation rather than technical ability. He is aware that Microsoft's technical form of communication is effective with large businesses, but he is keen to ensure that small businesses come to understand better what computers can do for them.

No ordinary Joe
Article Abstract:
Technology will not resolve all business problems, according to Compaq UK head Joe McNally. He believes that the best way to expand a business is to give others responsibility and to place trust in them. He acknowledges that Compaq has failed to listen to its customers in the past, and this is why its rival Dell became more popular among small businesses. It is now seeking to compete directly with Dell, and later in 1999 will sell and supply a range of small business computers through direct sales channels.
