Membranous laryngotracheobronchitis
Article Abstract:
Membraneous laryngotracheobronchitis (MLTB) is one possibility in ill children presenting with rapid onset of respiratory distress. MLTB is a bacterial infection that becomes superimposed on a viral upper respiratory infection, causing copious, thick mucous to obstruct the trachea. It is rare and can be life-threatening. It can be distinguished from other conditions producing similar symptoms such as severe viral laryngotracheobronchitis, epiglottitis, and foreign body lodged in the respiratory tract. X rays and endoscopic examination of the upper respiratory tract may help with the diagnosis. Treatment consists of maintaining an airway by passing a tube through the nose to the trachea and antibiotic therapy. A case history is presented of a nine-year-old who first presented with a sore throat, pain on swallowing, and fever. An antibiotic was injected. Six hours later she returned with high fever and difficulty breathing. X rays revealed tracheal obstruction.

Nonlinear sheep in a noisy world
Article Abstract:
Further research is required to establish scientific links between statistics and ecology in non-linear dynamics. Scientists Bryan Grenfell et al have used statistics to establish a nonlinear, time-series model using self-exciting threshold autoregressives which describe ecological events. This work demonstrates that closer working relationships are required to further scientific knowledge in ecology and statistics.

Don't believe all you read!
Article Abstract:
Consumers can identify unofficial and unreliable medical reports about a new product or discovery by searching for the essential facts. A reliable report answers the questions who conducted the study, what the investigation is all about, why the study was done, and when the research was done.
