Dorothy West
Article Abstract:
Dorothy West was an author who grew up in Boston with a family home in Martha's Vineyard for holidays. Her father had been born when slavery still existed, but he moved from this condition to developing a successful business. West entered the movement of African American culture based in Harlem, before returning to Martha's Vineyard. She wrote 'The Living is Easy', published in 1948, and 'The Wedding', published in 1995. She focused on the African American middle class, and thought it wrong to see African Americans solely as victims. She saw class, education and manners as more important than color.

Dorothy's dream
Article Abstract:
Women have achieved greater equality in the 20th century and this trend is unlikely to be reversed in the near future. Women have been allowed to vote and to study and have entered the workforce in greater numbers, helped by changes in employment opportunities whereby the kind of work available has become more suited to women. Women still tend not to be paid as much as men, and are often in different kinds of jobs. Equality in terms of sharing work may be less pronounced in countries that industrialized first and lost previous habits of sharing.

Paul Bowles
Article Abstract:
Paul Bowles was an existentialist who was fascinated by the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Bowles wrote ballet music and music for motion pictures. He was influenced by US music, while European authors influenced his writing. His work 'The Sheltering Sky', was initially rejected by Doubleday, and was then published in England, followed by a US publication in 1949. It was well received by critics. Interest in his work receded until the motion picture 'The Sheltering Sky' by Bernado Bertolucci came out in 1990, leading to a revival in the novel.
