Bidding for new 3G leases restarted in November 2004 after the last attempted launch in 2003. The 160-character formula short message service (SMS) has already transformed the way many people work and spread gossip, makes dinner dates or cast a vote for music video. More than 360 billion text messages are sent annually worldwide.
