Several investment banks are reportedly organizing takeover bids for Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd. as the date of the colony's reversion to Chinese control nears. Many believe that the Chinese government is unlikely to allow Cable and Wireless PLC to maintain majority control over a key Hong Kong industry such as telecommunications. Cable and Wireless officials have denied that the company plans to sell Hong Kong Telecommunications.

Tung Chee Hwa concedes China aided his company

Former-shipping tycoon Tung Chee Hwa confessed that his family's Orient Overseas International Ltd. received financial aid from the Chinese government in 1985. Tung, who is running for Hong Kong's chief executive position in July 1997, previously denied claims of Chinese financial assistance. Politicians and businessmen expressed fear that China will interfere with Hong Kong politics if Tung is appointed.

Colony economic growth masks consumers' gloom

Statistics show that the Hong Kong economy is enjoying strong growth and experts expect more of the same in 1995. However, the general attitude among Hong Kong consumers is one of pessimism as they struggle to cope with rising interest rates and declining stock and property prices. This pervasive feeling of uncertainty is reflected in changing consumer spending habits and weak purchasing activity.
