Doubts may roil markets: volatility is expected ahead of May 11 elections
Article Abstract:
The Philippine financial markets are expected to be very volatile during the May 11 elections as banks become conservative in their financial activities. As early as a week before the elections, the Philippine peso plunged to the $1:PP40 level while the stock market's 2.2% gain was achieved with low trading volume. Many banks are hoarding their dollar holdings which is being countered by the central bank by increasing overnight borrowing rates and rates for maturities. Many speculate that the Philippine peso may still slide to the PP41 to PP43 level if the elections prove to be full of trouble.
