Bear market
Article Abstract:
Russia intends to move from second to first place in the global table of arms suppliers. The Asian market plays a large part in these expansion plans, with Russia hoping to expand beyond its traditional Asian allies. Major Russian orders from Indonesia and Malaysia have shaken the arms industry, as these countries have previously looked to European and American suppliers. The Southeast Asian market is a major growth area. Indonesia, for example, increased its arms expenditure from $69 million in 1992 to $537 million in 1996. An evaluation of the market and of Russian products is included.

The East is read
Article Abstract:
It is now possible to access most of Asia's national daily newspapers via the World Wide Web. In Japan, the best sites in terms of timeliness, coverage and business content are the Nikkei or Nihon Keizei Shimbun, the Asahi Shimbun and The Daily Yomiuri. There is a good search facility for South Korea's Digital Chosun Ilbo. In Pakistan, most newspaper Web sites have rather offputting design, but it is worth accessing the Daily Dawn Internet Edition. The best Indian sites are The Times of India, The Economic Times and The Telegraph.

Will it fly? With its AE-100 passenger jet project, China is making a bold move into the mainstream of aircraft manufacturing. But experts aren't sure the venture will be commercially viable
Article Abstract:
Aviation Industries of China (AVIC), the state-owned company, will require money and technology if China's ambitious plan to build a 100-seater-class jet is to go ahead. AVIC will also have to compete with established international aircraft makers as well as smaller Asian companies. The project is likely to cost about $1.7 billion and is expected to be a collaboration between AVIC, Singapore Technologies and Aero International Asia, a European consortium.
