Down in the dumps
Article Abstract:
Morocco suffered a contraction of gross domestic product (GDP) in 1999 and economic growth is likely to be poor in 2000. Large numbers of civil servants account for much of government spending, and rural poverty and unemployment are serious problems. Privatizations and a drive against bribery should help the economy. The informal sector is large, and real levels of economic growth may be higher than official levels, while tourism also offer hope for growth.
