British petroleum exploration companies have been affected by a drop in petroleum prices and a drop in their stock prices. They are not diversified in the way that large petroleum companies are, so are more exposed to petroleum price fluctuations. They have still be successful in developing niches and cultivating contacts. Many small British oil companies have had success outside Britain. Investors may be wary of these firms, but they are respected by the larger petroleum companies.

Political factors affect the entry of foreign companies into Iranian oil fields. There are the US sanctions against Iran, and problems within Iran which hamper deals with companies from outside the US.
