Drug giants agree to settle pricing suit

Hoechst Marion Roussel, a unit of Hoechst AG of Germany, Pharmacia & Upjohn Inc., Abbott Laboratories and Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Inc., the pharmaceutical unit of France's Rhone-Poulenc SA, have agreed to pay around $350 million to settle class-action price fixing litigation. The case was filed by thousands of independent US pharmacies and drugstore chains. US District Judge Charles Kocoras in Chicago, IL, who is overseeing the litigation, needs to approve the terms of the agreement. The settlement would cover numerous lawsuits filed starting in 1993 and consolidated into one action.

Baxter concedes its filters do figure in patients' deaths; inquiry finds some fluid used to test dialyzers failed to evaporate
Article Abstract:
Illinois-based Baxter International Inc. admits that its dialysis filters and a chemical used in testing for leaks may have contributed to the deaths of 51 people internationally. The United States' Food and Drug Administration is investigating two deaths in Texas, 10 in Spain, four in Italy, five in Germany, 21 in Croatia and seven in Taiwan. The chemical was made by 3M, the filters in Sweden, the fibers in Florida.

Boehringer to share Mobic rights in U.S
Article Abstract:
Abbot Laboratories has purchased the co-marketing rights in the US for the Mobic drug. Mobic represents one of a new class of pain medications that are generally named "Cox-2 inhibitors." Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH, which manufactures Mobic, will sell the drug together. The marketing agreement with Boehringer reflects the increasingly-aggressive style of Miles D. White, the new CEO of Abbot.
