EGAT rethinks Thai power requirements
Article Abstract:
The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand had originally planned to invite tenders for the second round of IPP bids in Aug or Sep 1997. However, it will now delay this process until late 1997 or early 1998, as it feels that it is necessary to reconsider its energy needs. This follows an agreement to take more than initially planned from phases I and II in the first tender round. Agreement has already been reached with the Union Energy consortium to construct a $1.3 billion coal-fired plant in Prachupa Khiri Khan province.

Chinese puzzle over first BOT project for power
Article Abstract:
China has sanctioned plans for its first build-operate-transfer (BOT) power project. The 700 MW Laibin B power plant project, to be sited in the province of Guangxi, will cost more than $580 million to build, with financing to be provided by foreign investment. Electricite de France and GEC-Alsthom are to jointly build the plant, which they will operate for 15 years before its transfer to the Chinese government. Other BOT projects could rely on the success of the Laibin venture.
