Article Abstract:
Elbee Services Ltd (ESL) which began in 1981 to offer travel related services later ventured into courier operations. The company saw a major growth after the management was taken over by Sandip Shah in 1987. In 1987, it tied up with International Marketing Ltd (IML), an overseas express company, to expand its services to the international market. In 1989, when IML was taken over by UPS (United Parcel Services), ESL tied up with UPS for a service partnership. ESL is now into express services, logistics, distribution services and ticketing services. ESL's domestic network includes 300 destinations and 185 countries in the international market. It is the third largest company with 14 percent share. In domestic market it holds 13 percent and a 16 percent in the international segment. During 1997, it showed a growth of 22.5 percent in sales at Rs1,156.3 million while net profit dropped by 22 percent to Rs23.3 million. For the half year ended September 1997, it has accumulated a loss of Rs34 million against a turnover of Rs561.3 million. Its performance in 1997-98 are very disappointing and for which it is yet to declare results. Its cargo venture through its Elbee Aviation with an investment of Rs300 million has turned out to be a flop. (um)
