ANTI-DUMPING DUTY ON ACETYLENE BLACK
Article Abstract:
An anti-dumping duty of 18 percent has been imposed on imports of acetylene black. In September 1998, the Director-General of Safeguards had suggested an anti-dumping duty on imported acetylene black. This duty had been proposed to protect the Rs40- crore domestic acetylene black industry from dumping by other countries. The Director-General of Safeguards had found that 4 Indian producers of acetylene black had been hit due to imports of the substance from Singapore, China, Philippines, Japan and Belgium at cheaper prices. He had suggested an anti-dumping duty of 18 percent, subject to a maximum of Rs12,950, per tonne in 1999 and 5 percent, subject to a maximum of Rs8,830, per tonne in 2000 AD. (ag) (kvr)

CHANGE IN ROUTE PUSHES GOLD, SILVER IMPORTS UP 253%
Article Abstract:
Gold and silver imports into India increased by 253 percent valued at $3.3 billion during April-November 1998. The rise is attributed to a change in the channel of imports from the non- resident baggage route to the normal reporting system for imports. The Indian government has permitted designated agencies to import gold without license on payment of a specified duty from October 1997. (uh)(vr)
