ELCINA WANTS 8% EXCISE ON B&W TVs
Article Abstract:
The Electronic Component Industries Association (Elcina) has, in its pre-budget memorandum to the Government of India, sought a uniform 8 percent excise duty on black and white (B&W) television sets. Black and white television sets are now exempted from excise duty. Elcina has suggested a uniform excise duty of 8 percent on all electronic components. The electronic components market is worth Rs7,389 crore. Unlawful imports of electronic components are worth Rs1,100 crore. The association wants the levying of peak rate of customs duty on populated printed circuit boards (PCBs) instead of sectoral concessions. This would not only encourage the domestic electronic components industry but also discourage imports, it feels. (uh/kvr)

NOTHING WHITE OR BROWN, RATHER GRAY
Article Abstract:
The finance minister has announced an eight percent hike in customs duty for all white and brown goods. This will have an impact on costs, depending on the level of component indigenisation by manufacturers. Prices are expected to go up between three and seven percent. The hike may also hit colour picture tube manufacturers as some of their raw material is imported. The five percent restriction on modified value added tax (Modvat) is applicable to this sector also.(uh)
