ELRTS HITS RAILWAY BLOCK
Article Abstract:
The proposed Rs4,800 crore elevated light rail transit system (ELRTS), which is to be established in Bangalore, is facing a legal dispute. This may affect the project. The ELRTS project is a joint venture of the UB consortium and the Bangalore Mass Rapid Transit Ltd (BMRTL). It has been held up due to the claims made by the Indian Railways (IR). It contends that all rail projects should come under its purview. IR has claimed that it is the deciding authority on factors like type of technology to be used, tariff structure and the type of gauge on which the rail would run. BMRTL has countered the contention of IR. The first phase of the 96 km network is expected to be completed by 2001 AD. (gs)
