EMU's next steps

The European Community's member nations and political leaders are forming new policy positions on the planned EMU currency union in the wake of the electoral defeat of the Maastricht treaty on political union in a June 2, 1992 Denmark referendum. EC leaders should take time to reassess Maastricht.

Which way to EMU?

The European Monetary Institute plans to establish the use of ecu currency and coordinate the monetary policy of European Exchange Rate members. Most economists argue that the ERM would be vulnerable to semi-fixed exchange rates and other factors of the EMU.
