EU Commissioner calls for inter-modal co-ordination to cut congestion
Article Abstract:
EU Transport Commissioner Loyola de Palacio is recommending investments in high-speed trains to solve congestion caused by the hub-and-spoke pattern used by majority of Europe's major airlines. The Commissioner claims 65% of the EU's scheduled traffic goes through the top 20 airports. Palacio says the modern rail systems would carry passengers from airport centers to destinations that are currently properly served only by air routes. She adds there is a need to resolve congestion at major airports through a more balanced distribution of flights across the continent.

Testing times for South Korea
Article Abstract:
South Korea's new Inchon International Airport is scheduled to operate on time, with the opening of the 8-lane Airport Expressway in Nov 2000. The airport has already conducted the second of five planned operational trials, participated by a Korean Air Airbus A300-600R and an Asiana Boeing 767. However, it is not yet clear how the transfer of operations from Kimpo International Airport to Inchon would be conducted. The South Korean government is favoring an overnight move while the airport's managers want a two-phase plan.
