EU: Low salmon prices
Article Abstract:
The present market price of salmon DKr17(US$2) per kilo is below the minimum price, DKR25 per kilo, established in the agreement between EU and Norway. The market is flooded by bred salmon from the Faroes, Scotland and Chile, which has lowered the prices. As a consequence several Norwegian breeders will reduce production or discontinue business. The fish processing industry and fish retailers that will gain from the low prices in a short term view would prefer a more stable market according to Jogrun Djurhuus of Vestlax A/S company, since retail prices will also be under pressure. Danish exports of smoked salmon are estimated to be 13 000 tons per year to a value of DKr1bn.
