Saved, at a price
Article Abstract:
The state of California and the federal government have made an agreement with the Pacific Lumber Company to preserve a redwood forest, Headwater Forest, the last of old-growth trees to be owned privately. The agreement involves the purchase of land and a 50-year ban on logging in 12 groves owned by the company. The agreement allows some logging in buffer zones which are being established to protect wildlife. Pacific Lumber's parent company is Maxxam, and Maxxam's boss is protected from additional lawsuits as part of the agreement.

A goat, a rug, special price?
Article Abstract:
Smuggling is common in the Middle East, and applies to everyday items which are affected by regulations or tariffs, as well as narcotics and other illegal goods. Goods may also be very cheap in one country, due to subsidies, which creates an incentive to smuggle them for sale in countries where they are more expensive. Import duties tend to be high in the Middle East due to problems in raising taxes, so cutoms duties are a key source of government revenue.
