EU expected soon to rule on air pacts
Article Abstract:
The European Commission is expected on Jul. 8, 1998, to rule on trans-Atlantic alliances between British Airways and AMR Corp's American Airlines, as well as Lufthansa, SAS and United Airlines. European Union Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert said the ruling would require the carriers cede takeoff and landing slots and reduce the frequency of flights on some routes for a six-month period. Van Miert also said the alliance partners need to make serious concessions to keep them from controlling a number of trans-Atlantic routes.
