EU lowers demand of U.K. slots to be ceded for British Air deal
Article Abstract:
British Airways is expected to receive a request from the European Commission (EU) to give up 267 takeoff and landing slots at Heathrow and Gatwick Airports in London, UK. The requirement is part of the commission's ruling involving British Airways' proposed alliance with AMR Corp.'s American Airlines. The number is lower than the initial proposal launched by Competition Commissioner Karen Van Miert to require the airline to give up around 350 slots to competitors at Heathrow. The EU is also expected to ask British Airways and American Airlines to reduce the number of flights they operate on key routes to make room for competitors.
