EU raps MasterCard over fees

The European Commission has required MasterCard International Inc. to drop specific fees it currently applies to debit- and credit-card transactions, stating that MasterCard's actions constitute cartel behavior. The Commission has given MasterCard six months to comply, after which the credit card firm will face fines up to $350,000 per day. MasterCard is appealing the directive.

MasterCard sues Visa over debit-issuer fees

MasterCard International Inc. has filed a lawsuit against Visa USA Inc. over the use of allegedly coercive tactics in preventing some of the former's member banks from leaving Visa to join rival organizations. MasterCard filed the suit in the U.S. District Court in New York.
