EUROPE: TELECOM OPERATORS AND THE UMTS CHALLENGE
Article Abstract:
European telecom operators are banking on i-mode, on the basis of the successful mobile Internet access service by NTT DoCoMo which seduced 12.6mn users in Japan over less than two years. The large scope of sites available (over 24,000 in September 2000), a billing system based on the services used (when WAP services are billed on a time basis), and the strong position of the Japanese operator in its country (almost a monopoly) are the main reasons for this success which European rivals would like to replicate. While working on the multiplication of services available from the UMTS, European operators took advantage of the recent Idate international meeting in Montpellier (France) to confirm their commitment toward this third generation technology in mobile telephony. UMTS might be profitable four to seven years after it is launched in 2002, says France Telecom's boss, Michel Bon. Investors are worried on the return on investment potential of the UMTS, a technology which will require a minimum investment worth some EUR 300bn.

FRANCE: 9 SMS MESSAGES PER MONTH, SURVEY SAYS
Article Abstract:
Compared to a standard voice message, SMS messages provide telephone operators with a revenue 300 times higher (per second), on the basis of a price of FFr 1 all taxes included (EUR 0.15) for each SMS message worth a size of 160 characters. A survey by Arthur D.Little shows the French send 9 SMS messages a month, compared to 43 units in continental Europe on average. This gap is the result of the lack of SMS offers in France and the lack of information on the system, according to French operators.
