EXIDE INDUSTRIES - ASSAULT, EXIDE AND BATTERY
Article Abstract:
Exide Industries, the largest storage battery manufacturer, plans to corner the market share of the unorganised sector, which sells around seven batteries for every three batteries sold by the organised sector. In this direction, Exide has slashed the prices by nearly 25 to 30 percent in the automotive batteries segment, making it almost unremunerative for local operators to make and sell storage batteries. The company has also started to make dealership offers to key players in the unorganised sector. The automotive battery segment in which Exide earns 70 percent of its turnover is caught in a grip of recession at present. The break- up of Exide's business between automotive and industry battery has changed from 70:30 to 65:35. The company is increasing its production from 3.5 million batteries to 4.3 million at present. Recently, Exide acquired Standard Batteries at a cost of Rs11 crore, cornering a market share of 90 percent in the original equipment market segment (OEM) and 75 percent of the replacement market. In the submarines segment, Exide is the only company to have the entire range of Type I and Type II batteries meeting Indian's Navy's complete requirements. (gsh)
