Earning credit: Peking makes concessions to enhance US ties
Article Abstract:
China's most favoured nation (MFN) status eligibility is scheduled to come up for re-certification before the US Congress on Jun 1992. As the date neared, Chinese officials freed three septuagenarian Catholic priests who were langushing in jail for their loyalty to the Vatican rather than to the Church in China. A Washington Post correspondent kept under house arrest for a week was also suddenly freed. Analysts say these actions are calculated to win US Congress' approval on the MFN vote. However, the Chinese government's human rights violations, trade imbalances and other disagreements with the West is seen as likely to aggravate tension in Sino-US relations.
