Eastern blockage
Article Abstract:
Millions of victims of the Jewish Holocaust did not receive anything from life insurance policies taken out prior to the 1939-1945 war. The liabilities involved, and who should pay them are difficult to assess. The goverments of Eastern Europe nationalized many insurers during the late 1940s, and parent companies of the insurers argue that these governments took on their liabilities in this case. Some insurers, such as Generali, are more affected than others, such as French and Swiss insurers with little involvement in the market in Eastern Europe.

Storm across America
Article Abstract:
Aegon saw a rise in its stock price after the life insurer announced the acquisition of Transamerica. This is the largest such deal in the history of US life insurance. Aegon acquired Providian in 1997, and the group ranks second in the US market for life insurance, after Prudential. There are some benefits from the deal, such as cost savings, but Aegon chairman, Kees Storm, appear to have lowered his acquisition hurdle rate. This may because interest rates have dropped, though one could ask whether Storm has been seduced by a fashion for mergers.
