Vaclav Havel, westward ho!
Article Abstract:
Vaclav Havel is seriously ill, but the Czech Republic needs their president. His guidance is needed at a time of difficulty in domestic politics, as is his sense of humor, and he is needed to help the Czech Republic join the European Union (EU). He favors links with the rest of Europe, and with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The Czech Republic is among the priority candidates for EU membership and this pleases Havel. He foresees difficulties in negotiations but favors European integration.

Article Abstract:
Turkey's participation in the customs union will cost the country a great deal in lost tariffs, and Greece is attempting to block the $460 million in promised aid to Turkey. Full membership in the European Union seems unlikely in the near term.
