Economic investment times for capacity expansion problems
Article Abstract:
A simple rule to determine the optimal investment timing for a capacity expansion problem is presented. The timing rule can be considered robust because of its independence of qualitative aspects of the demand process that limit potential investment epochs to concur with initial passage times. Furthermore, it is based on a general class of stochastic demand processes that allow the application of results to sequential multiple expansions.

Layout design for flexible manufacturing systems
Article Abstract:
The quadraticassignment problem (QAP) solution is applied to the layout design problem for flexible manufacturing systems with machines of varying sizes, such as the loop-conveyor and linear-track conveyor systems. Experimental computations reveal that the the QAP is effective and provides optimal or near-optimal solutions for such cases.

A graph-theoretic heuristic for designing loop-layout manufacturing systems
Article Abstract:
A common layout problem for loop networks in flexible manufacturing systems is minimizing the maximum reloading frequency for a family of parts. A machine layout is generated by graph-theoretic heuristic applying linear-programming relaxation of the problem. Initial results from experimentalcomputations are presented.
