Economists ponder impact of a bold yen
Article Abstract:
The continued appreciation of the yen has taken a toll on exporters' earnings but it will not cause an economic crisis in Japan. This is due to the steady improvement of the Japanese economy. A growth of 8.1% was recorded in the first three months of 1999 which served as a cushion against the strength of the yen. The rise in the value of the yen can be traced to inward flows of capital from investors eager to cash in on Japan's economic recovery. By purchasing Japanese assets, the influx of cash has pushed up the value of the yen.

Market rules to be stricter
Article Abstract:
The Japanese government disclosed plans to harness stock speculators and chastise market manipulators more aggressively. Nonetheless, some analysts claimed the move will still be unable to strengthen the stock market. Analysts also claimed the plans are aimed at warding off a market breakdown before a more comprehensive package of financial methods passes through the Japanese parliament late in January 1998. However, Finance Minister Hiroshi Mitsuzuka disclaimed the measures were designed to strengthen stock prices.
