Edinburgh tour de force: At Benson and Forsyth's Museum of Scotland, the monumental architecture proves the most powerful exhibit
Article Abstract:
Benson and Forsyth's museum in Edinburgh opened in December 1998 after nine years of design and construction. The entrance tower brings together the junction of five streets, and the facades to Chambers Street and George IV Bridge are clad in a veneer of stone clashach from Moray. The long dark entrance hall is dimly lit from the north, and the central court is top-lit. A series of rooms at the ground floor are separated by thick walls that create deep thresholds and controlled glimpses. A cost analysis and summary is provided, along with working details.
