Efficiency outcomes of market concentration and managed care
Article Abstract:
The reaction of the hospital cost efficiency to the extensive horizontal integrations of hospitals and rapid growth of managed care in the US health care industry is examined. It is shown that higher managed care penetration over time is associated with greater hospital efficiency and that higher market concentration is associated with efficiency when markets are highly competitive of highly concentrated.
