El coste de adaptacion se eleva a 200,000 millones

According to the Spanish ministry for public administration, adaptation of computer systems for the Year 2000 for the private sector and the government will cost between Pta 150,000mn and Pta 200,000mn. A new commission called the Efecto 2000 has been set up to co-ordinate an action plan which will include representatives from regional government, private sector and central government. The schedule to be used by the commission will be that by July 31, 1998 studies regarding adaptation should be concluded. By June 30, 1999 systems should be changed, and final testing should be carried out in the second half of 1999. Suppliers have been asked to ensure new equipment come prepared with modifications. Businesses are requesting that some type of label be placed on new equipment.

Ahorro de 30,000 millones por el 'medicamentazo'

The Spanish cabinet has approved the measure whereby some 834 medicines will no longer receive public subsidies under what it known as the 'medicamentazo'. The Pta 30,000mn expected to be saved through the move will be invested in public health improvements. The initiatives contemplated under the measure are: generic medicine to be put on the market, reduced margins for distributors and pharmacies; implementation of medicine reference prices in 1999; and industry contributions totalling Pta 40,000mn.

The chemist's association of Barcelona (Spain) has denounced the facility through which it is possible to acquire pharmaceuticals in the Internet. The association (which has calculated nearly 1,000 medicines available in the net) alerts about the lack of control from the health departments, the lack of information about the pharmaceutical properties and composition, and about the sell-by date.
