Election boom
Article Abstract:
The Philippines' May 1992, general elections are expected to lead to favorable economic developments. The major presidential candidates are perceived to be capable of improving the country's economy and the winner will experience a 'honeymoon period,' in which money will flow to the stock markets because economic growth is expected to be strong. Economic growth will gather speed after the elections, with economists forecasting a 2.6% rate for 1992, and 5.7% in 1993. Stockbrokers are anticipating substantial increases in stock indices.

Caught off-balance
Article Abstract:
The Philippine economy is a mixed bag, furthering such confusion as the central bank press office's announcement that investment in the country slipped in early 1995 because of the Mexican peso crisis. That contradicted statements by the Finance Secretary, the central bank's own governor, and its research dept. While total investment did fall, portfolio investment rose, and direct foreign investment was up from the end of 1994. Imports and exports both rose, raising both the trade deficit and foreign reserves.

Article Abstract:
The Philippine economy is not susceptible to the same woes as Mexico endured recently, largely because it has not enjoyed Mexico's growth boom. Investment in the Philippines is largely stagnant and GNP growth rose to only 5.1% in 1994 from 2.6% in 1993. The trade deficit in 1994 rose 26% to $7.8 billion, 12.5% of the GNP, and inflation, which reached 7.1% last year, is rising. The country needs continued work on its economic fundamentals, and several years of steady, moderate growth.
