Pechiney says outlook is solid despite lower net

Pechiney SA posted a 27% fall in its net profits for the first-half of 1999. The company attributed the fall to low aluminum prices. Pechiney posted 132 million euros in net profits for the first-half period ending on June 30. During the same period in 1998, the company reported 181 million euros. Sales declnied from 5.23 billion euros to 4.84 billion euros during the period. Pechiney said that its outlook was still strong despite the net profit fall.

Elf's net fell 16% in first half, but results surpass expectations

Elf Aquitaine SA posted higher-than-expected earnings for the first-half of 1999. The company reported a decline of 16% in its net profits for the period to 590 million euros. During the same period in 1998, Elf posted 699 million euros in net profits. The fall in net profits was blamed on low oil prices during the early part of 1999. Elf also posted a 10% fall in revenues from 17.2 billion euros to 16.4 billion euros.
