Elusive threat: security agency focuses on separatist movements
Article Abstract:
The National Intelligence Coordinating Board (Bakin), Indonesia's chief intelligence agency, is mainly concerned with monitoring separatist movements. Bakin's director, Sudibiyo, reports that the political atmosphere in which his agency does its work requires it to concentrate on political, separatist and religious groups that imperil the unity of the multi-island country. However, he discounts the threat posed by Islamic fundamentalism. Bakin must rely on other agencies for intelligence-gathering and on other countries for foreign intelligence.

Remilitarised zone: army strengthens its role in politics
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's armed forces are reasserting their political influence in anticipation of Pres Suharto's likely retirement in 1998. This renewed political activity is focusing on shoring up control of the governing Golkar Party, as indicated by the military's success in getting former armed forces chief Try Sutrisno chosen vice-president in Mar 1993. The military, probably under the guidance of former defence minister Benny Murdani, hopes to cement its control of Golkar when the party elects a new chairman at its next congress in October.
