Embattled Sega Enterprises searches for direction

Videogame hardware company Sega Enterprises Ltd. is planning to merge with toymaker Bandai Co. in an effort to emerge from three consecutive years of losses since 1993. The home video-game division of Sega Enterprises, whose Sega Saturn game machine sales lagged behind Sony Corp.'s Playstation and Nintendo Co.'s Nintendo 64, suffered losses of 33.5 mil Japanese yen ($275 mil) in year ending Mar 1996.

Japan relents on HDTV
Article Abstract:
An advisory panel to Japan's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications proposed that the government discard its antiquated analog high-definition television system (HDTV). A digital HDTV system was proposed as a replacement. The move would not immediately wipe out Japan's analog HDTV standard, but stifle its imminent progress and prepare Japan's final changeover to a digital HDTV system.
