Developing countries around the world have experienced economic difficulties with various banking crises, with an estimated total loss since 1980 of some $250 billion. Possible solutions lie in avoiding exchange-rate volatility and in tightening standards for banking supervision.

Banks in developing countries have been prone to crises in the past two decades because of poor management, bad economic policy, and other missteps. The crises have an international ripple effect and have jeopardized the credibility of emerging market banks.
