Several European countries and companies are rethinking retirement policies. A change might allow some individuals to gradually retire over a period of years. The UK will abolish mandatory retirement at 65 in 2006 because it is discriminatory. Pension funds could get scarce as there are more retired individuals than workers.

U.K.'s big companies narrow pension deficits

Pension funds for the biggest public companies of the United Kingdom ranked by market capitalization showed improvements in 2007, with accounting deficits shrinking by 95% for the year. The aggregate deficit decreased to 2 bil pounds sterling from 40 bil pounds sterling at year's end 2006.

Hermes names Watson to succeed CEO Ross
