Empty dreams: Thais about to close last Cambodia refugee camp
Article Abstract:
The closing of the last Cambodian refugee camp in Thailand is scheduled for Mar 30, 1993. Of the 379,000 refugees not resettled to other countries, all but 20,000 have already returned to Cambodia. The refugees were offered free choice of location and plots of land, and later, $50 per adult to repatriate. None of the Cambodian factions has tried to sabotage the operation, but observers wonder whether a new wave of refugees will be produced if the UN-sponsored elections do not lead to a peaceful outcome.

The Libyan connection: US puts pressure on Thais building chemical plant
Article Abstract:
Thailand must decide what to do about the US demand that it compel three Thai companies to repatriate 200 Thai workers in Libya who the US claims are employed at a factory that makes chemical weapons. US-Thai relations, already strained over Thailand's violations of intellectual property rights and labor policies, may worsen more if Thailand defies the US. On the other hand, the 25,000 Thai workers in Libya may face Libyan retribution if Thailand acts as the US wishes.
