Hitting a nerve: US-Thai links strained over Khmer Rouge
Article Abstract:
Thai-US relations may deteriorate due to two recent developments concerning Thailand's links with the Khmer Rouge, the extremist Cambodian group. Assistant Sec of State for East Asia and the Pacific Winston Lord said during questioning by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Jun 16, 1993 that Thailand is giving economic aid to the Khmer Rouge in defiance of UN sanctions. The second event was Thailand's Jun 20 announcement that it would not allow the US to carry out aerial reconnaissance over the Thai-Cambodian border to check on Khmer Rouge activity.

'We are scared.' (uncertain future for Cambodia after flawed election)
Article Abstract:
Cambodia faces an uncertain political future following the flawed election on Jul 26, 1998, which allowed the Cambodian People's Party to strengthen its hold on power. The 500 international observers who monitored the election stated that it was free and fair, but they visited only 18% of the 1,600 vote-counting stations. There are reports of widespread voter intimidation by the Cambodian People's Party, as well as threats against opposition supporters.
