End of a ritual
Article Abstract:
Annual pay rises have come to appear normal, yet this has not always been the case, and the practice developed in the late 1950s. There is less of a case for an annual rise at a time when inflation is low. Employees tend to see rises in money terms, and prefer a rise of less than inflation to no rise at all when inflation is almost zero, though they may be better off in real terms with no rise. Inflation is dangerous since it can become uncontrollable. Greater flexibility for wage agreements would also help to boost productivity.
