Energy sector drags down currency markets

Commodities prices are not expected to recover during 1st qtr 1999 because of weak demand and oversupply in several sectors. Energy products, industrial metals and soft commodities are facing these difficulties. There was no agreement in oil supply reductions after the meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

One-month gold lease rates dip to new lows
Article Abstract:
Gold lease rates have decreased to 25 basis points in late 1998 from 160 basis points in early 1998. These rates, which are the cost of borrowing gold, reflect the demand and supply of gold in the market. Although there is credit rationing throughout the world there has not been a withdrawal of gold from the market.

Finland's Fortum issue lacks spark
Article Abstract:
The stock of Fortum, the result of the merger of Neste and Imatran Voima, was listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange on Nov 23-24, 1998. The collapse of world oil prices caused Fortum oil prices to fall, although they did rebound somewhat.
