English lessens: on this campus, Cantonese rules
Article Abstract:
The caliber of English used at the putatively English-medium University of Hong Kong has plummeted in the past two decades, for cultural reasons rather than through a failure on the school's part. Even as the govt expanded the university, more of the English-trained middle-class students in the colony have gone overseas. At the same time, Contonese alternatives to US music and other cultural influences now reduce street-level exposure to English. The premium for English speakers on the mainland may help reverse the trend.

New girls on the block: the Chinese face of Hong Kong vice
Article Abstract:
Prostitution in Hong Kong is changing, with at least the cut-rate Mongkok sex district seeing an upswing in mainland Chinese women following a crackdown by police on Malaysians. The sex trade is not illegal in the colony, but being middle-men is, and police focus on controlling the triads and syndicates that siphon off most of the money. The trails of cash are often hard to follow, though. After 1997, with a vast supply of women from mainland China drawn to Hong Kong's relative wealth, the city may resemble Shenzhen.

If it ain't broke ... some say Asian business doesn't need fixing
Article Abstract:
Harvard professor Michael Porter's management theories are under attack by those who say the reality of doing business in Asia is quite different from what academicians think. Business leaders say the region's competitive advantage lies in mass production and manufacturing of low-end goods; that diversification does not hurt a company's competitiveness and unlike America and Europe, the region is still developing.
