Enlisting Asean's help with Burma
Article Abstract:
The US should continue to work with Asean countries in advertising US interest in the region even though the regional body accepted Burma as member in spite of US opposition. The US probably should drop the argument for democracy in calling for the toppling of Burma's State Law and Order Restoration Council, but instead focus on issues that directly affect other Asean nations. Narcotics in one such issue as Burma is already the world's biggest producer of opium. The US should also continue to work with its two allies in the region, the Philippines and Thailand.
