Even directors don't know it all
Article Abstract:
There are three main approaches to the training of company directors. The first is courses aimed at people who have recently been appointed to a board, the second is training for more experienced senior executives and the third is courses designed to assist boards in working together more effectively. There can be problems with encouraging directors to becoming involved in training courses, as they often feel that to admit to a need for training could damage their authority. This comes at a time when the need for properly trained directors has become very clear.

Goodbye to macho management
Article Abstract:
Companies are increasingly acknowledging the value of actively striving for employee loyalty. Managers are facing up to the consequences of individuals coming to believe that their first loyalty is to themselves, and are also recognizing the connection between staff loyalty and customer loyalty. This connection is a circular one because, as well as customers responding to loyal employees, staff are also happier working for companies which promote customer loyalty through the value they offer. Some major principles of good management are presented and discussed.

Grow your own skills in Asia
Article Abstract:
Companies investing in Asia have relied too heavily on staff from the parent company, which is an expensive option. They may seek to use staff from other regions in Asia, but such staff may not want to uproot their families to work in underdeveloped locations. Business schools based in Asia are needed to create enough skilled managers, and JVs between companies and business schools can be fruitful. This problem is especially acute in China where some projects are being set up, for example at Qinghua University in Bejing.
