Saudi Arabia is not finding it easy to join the World Trade Organization, despite the political clout of its oil exports. Like China, most businesses are state-owned and intellectual property piracy is high. The Saudis hope to gain time to comply with WTO rules by winning developing-country status.

The long-running talks on China joining the World Trade Organisation (WTO) are at last coming to an end, and China may be admitted in early 2002. This may mark the start of the real challenge for China, since sticking to WTO economic conditions could bring some suffering, such as unemployment.

China took a clue from the collapse of the Soviet Union and initiated economic reforms, establishing five special economic zones that permit a free market private sector. China's economy is doing well largely because of its capitalist reforms.
