Uighurs face bleak future in Xinjiang
Article Abstract:
China continues to oppress Muslim Turkic Uighur peoples in Xinjiang province, and accuses the East Turkestan National Congress of supporting terrorism. But Western analysts say that the ETNC, which is headquartered in Munich and which represents 16 Uighur communities around the world, is committed to democracy and nonviolence. The oppression, which has been fierce since the Communists seized power in the area in 1949, could get worse when Communist Party general secretary Jiang Zemin hands over rule in 2002 to Vice President Hu Jintao, known for his brutal reign as governor of Tibet in 1989-92, where hd imposed martial law and imprisoned Buddhist monks and nuns.
