Article Abstract:
The European Commission has published a set of guidelines to encourage companies to consider including environmental issues in their financial reports. It is hoped that common standards can be introduced so that company accounts can be compared on a fairer basis. Other issues being considered by the EU's environment council include sustainable development and water quality, the reduction of CO2 emissions from cars and nuclear issues.

The European Community's environment ministers have agreed that energy laws to curb carbon dioxide emissions will be applied at a national level, despite serious concerns raised by the European Parliament. The environment council also agreed that national laws to phase out polychlorinated biphenyls by 2010 will be harmonised. Additionally, the European Parliament has finally approved the adoption of the packaging waste directive.

Article Abstract:
The European Union's (EU) environment ministers have made little progress with regulations governing ambient air quality, but it is hoped that a common position will emerge before mid-1995. Other outstanding issues yet to be settled include tighter controls on the transport of waste for recycling outside the EU, control of industrial pollution, national ecology taxes, acid rain and global warming.
