VSNL SEES MAJOR GAIN
Article Abstract:
Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) hopes to achieve major gains due to reduction in long distance telecom tariff by upto 60 percent. It expects its global telecom traffic to increase due to lower tariff. VSNL's volume of traffic and revenue is likely to increase by 30 percent considering a demand elasticity of 0.80. The lower tariffs will also help rectify the imbalance in traffic between India and the US. Currently, India's traffic to the US is around 50 million minutes per annum. The lower tariff will also enable VSNL to introduce international calling card. (ag)(vr)

GoI MOVE TO SHIFT 148 ITEMS TO SIL HAS LITTLE IMPACT
Article Abstract:
The Government of India has added 148 items to the special import licence (SIL) list. This action has failed to affect the premium commanded by these licences in the market. The premium on SIL licence fell to 3-3.5 percent on August 19, 1998, as the exporters felt that the additional items would not affect the demand for the licence. The exporters do not expect a rise in the demand as the additional items brought under SIL include goods like ruby and emerald, which are not traded in huge volumes. (ag)
